Principal’s Message

Dear JCSRS community,

Huge congratulations to all students for completing the ASDAN Creativity module in term three 2016. It was such a please to celebrate this occasion with Dr Wickins presenting certificates. I very much agree with Dr Wickins, it’s nice to get a certificate but it’s all the work the students put in that is so impressive. I know how talented many of our students are, the Art Exhibition was a true showcase of this.

This term we are enjoying our second unit of work ‘How Systems Work’. There is a focus on transport systems (with lots of practical activities) as well as restaurant systems and library systems. Our new school ‘shop’ has been very popular and enables students to demonstrate their learning.

We are reading “Lost in Hong Kong” by local author Matthew Cooper and we were fortunate to have him come and share his book with us. The book includes a lot of different transport in Hong Kong. The students had plenty of questions and were very engaged. Thank you Matthew for sharing this with us.

Teachers and therapists continue weekly planning and reflection sessions sharing ideas and ensuring we continue to learn and improve.

Today it was a pleasure to have the following people from EAST Hotel – Jonathan Wallace (Hotel Manager), Michael Lee  (Back of House Manager), Tommy Tsoi (Director of Housekeeping), Larry Tsang (Restaurant Manager, FEAST) also from Swire Restaurants – Willem van Emden (General Manager), Connie Chen (Operations Manager, PUBLIC) and Charon Lo (People Development Manager) join our school assembly. This was another opportunity for us to celebrate and showcase the great work of our students participating in vocational education.

Next term we have many exciting events on the calendar. At our annual Walkathon we will raise funds for Masarang and another charity that the student council will choose. This event will be followed by secondary camp and primary and secondary sports days.  See our Dates for your Diary for more information.

On return from the mid-term break we have two CPD days for staff and there is no school for students on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 October.

I wish you all a safe and relaxing mid term break. We will see all students on Wednesday 19 October.

Showcase – Silver Class

Silver Class has had a great start this year. Students are making progress; settling in well and making friends with their classmates. They are learning to effectively handle unexpected changes and regulate their emotions. iPads have been utilized by students for communication with staff to reconfirm their schedule and negotiate activities. Some have continued to develop their skills in learning sight words and writing.

This term students are working on the unit ‘Working with Systems’. They have been learning transport systems in Hong Kong. The book ‘Lost in Hong Kong’ was read, and students had researched transport systems by land, water and air in Hong Kong.

This week we concentrated on the MTR system. On October 3rd Silver Class had an educational expedition to Kowloon Station. Students were introduced to the concept of the MTR as a means of transportation, and were supervised practicing going on the MTR independently. They learnt to buy tickets or use their octopus card to go through the turnstile and board the train at Kowloon Station. Silver Class then journeyed to Olympic Station to have lunch.

Throughout the trip, students excelled themselves. They stood patiently in queue to buy tickets and when waiting to board the train. Some were thoughtful enough to allow other passengers to board first. The Silver Team is extremely proud of the students’ performance and their achievements. After half term, students will read a book titled ‘At the Airport’ to about learn air transportation and airport systems. Silver Class is excited and hope that a visit to the airport can be arranged.
