Principal’s Message

The end of term one is just around the corner now and so much to do! We can’t wait to have you join us for the Christmas Show on Wednesday 12th for a 1.00 start. Remember to be here early for the excellent stalls where you can buy your Christmas cards, decorations and presents for family and friends. Tea and coffee with a Christmas treat is also available.

We have wonderful support from our families and our friends. At the Chinese International School Fair the sister of one of our students Ethan ran a stall to raise funds for our school. Thank you Ingrid and your family and friends for your efforts and generosity.

Last weekend a some of our students joined their friends under Mike’s supervision to participate in Team Fear. The team train over several weekends and have outstanding results. Congratulations Harvey and William and thanks to Mike and families for supporting this.

Every year we have Creativity Action and Service (CAS) students from a number of ESF secondary schools come and spend time at our school. The students join in with class activities and learn about our students and our school. This is a real ‘win win’ as we benefit from ideas and skills of the CAS students and they learn about people who have additional needs and learn differently. This is some feedback from one of the CAS students

I would like to express my sincerest gratitude for the amazing week you and Jade class have given me. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of working with everyone and I will hold these memories (and the card!) very close to my heart.

Please thank Kevin, Edel, Liz and Marci for helping me and Renee, Kimika, Will, Liam, Varun, Jimmy, Gavin, Cindy and Cole for being so welcoming, kind and fabulous.

It was the best CAS week I have experienced in WIS since year 7.

Good luck for the school show!

Best wishes,

Lucia 🙂

This week I had the pleasure of joining Gold class at the Discovery Bay International School Sports for All day. We were all exhausted after participating in all sorts of activities with our friends from schools around Hong Kong.

I am delighted to share the news of the arrival of baby Orla Rose Carmody on Saturday morning. Huge congratulations to Karen and Martin, a baby sister for Mannix.

If you are looking for holiday activities for your son or daughter during the Christmas break you may consider the Breeze Inclusive Multi Sports Camp at JCSRS for safe, fun and healthy activities. See details later in this newsletter.

Next week we will put out a ‘special’ edition of the newsletter with photos of our Christmas Show so you can enjoy them together over the break.

Merry Christmas and safe and happy holidays to you all.
See you on Monday 7 January for another busy term.
Karin

Team Fear

As you can see from the photos it was a challenging course this year taking nearly 3 and a half hours for the 11.5km Team Fear adventure race.

William (JCSRS) paired with Maxx (KGV LSC) and completed the course fully independently which is a huge achievement and something we have been working towards for the past 3 years.
Harvey (racing for the first time and who only just learnt to ride a bike a few weeks ago) was paired with Lok (KGV LSC). Due to Harvey being a first-time participant I ran the course alongside.
The course took us up and down Discovery Bay hills, through a steep gorge, along the coastline next to the sea which had many rocks. There was an assault course on the beach, a sea swim to a junk (by far the coldest part for all including myself). All the boys jumped off the top of the junk and finished with a final sea swim and a short run to the finish line.
Thanks to all the parents for their support and training over the last 6 weeks and to Steve Coward of http://www.mtbhk.com/ for assisting in bike training.

Showcase Jade class

Jade class has had a fantastic first term.  In our Unit ‘Express yourself,’ students have been exploring different ways to express themselves.  Through the recommended texts, we learnt a collection of vocabulary words to describe different feelings such as joyful, disappointed, calm and annoyed.  Students have also made a ‘Mood Metre’ and discussed making different choices to express their feelings. To quote Kimika’s idea, ‘I will listen to music when I’m feeling sad.’   Also, students have participated in African Drumming, Move for Life dance and a lunchtime concert by HK Sinfonietta. In ASDAN Numeracy module, we went on a shopping trip to complete activities focused on Number strand.

Students also participated in various activities such as Special Olympics Football Challenge Day,  Special Olympics Fun Day and Special Olympics and FWD Bocce unified event. Liam has participated in sailing,  whereas Gavin and William joined the KGV Cross Country Race. William has also been a part of a few charity runs with his younger brother and competed in Team Fear with his friends on the weekends.

Students also completed the vocational education at Swire and Lohas in term one last week.  We have received very positive feedback from the providers regarding our students’ working attitude and performance.  We will continue the training with a new set of tasks in term two. Vocational at school has also extended to run the tuck shop at SENsations every Fridays, in addition to our regular day for recycling, laundry and office work on Wednesdays.  Well done everyone!

In the last couple of weeks,  Jade class has been busy in practising for the Christmas show.  We are all looking forward to showing everyone another ‘Wow’ from us!   See you all soon!
