Principal’s Message

Welcome back to the 2017/18 school year

A special welcome to the following students and their families – Krisha, William, Darren, Isis, Lucas, Stephen, Saad, Marcus, Jessica and Brandon.

It’s lovely to see the students arrive looking relaxed and healthy (and a whole lot taller!). The start of the year has been very smooth thanks to all families for working with us and to the staff for being so organised and keen. All around a great start to the new school year.

It was great to see so many of you at the Meet the Teacher,  Welcome Presentation and PTA AGM. Congratulations to David Dickhudt on becoming the new PTA Chair. I encourage you to join this wonderful group of volunteers who support the school in so many ways. You can keep up to date with PTA news via our website.

At JCSRS we try to find as many ways as possible to ‘live’ our vision and mission. This year we are displaying our school culture on the boards around the school.

We hope that most of you have received your JCSRS 2016/17 Yearbook. If you have not had one sent home or you would like to order one ($150) please let your class teacher know. This is also a good time to remind families that our school photo (individual and group) will be on Thursday 7th September.

Over the summer break we had some work at our school including upgrading the hall with new lighting and a renovated floor. We also had a room converted into a gym to ensure our students stay fit and healthy.

Just before the start of the school year we were very proud to participate in the ESF Chairman’s Awards. Congratulations to Hon Shan (Creativity Award), Brandon (Sport Award) and Steph (Commitment and Contribution to Service Award). Unfortunately Steph could not attend but his award will be sent to him.

We hope you find the fortnightly newsletter helpful, positive and informative. If you have any feedback this is always welcome. We also do our best to keep the website up to date and encourage you to go to the calendar and other sections regularly to see what we are doing. Teachers are very good at keeping in touch with parents using a number of methods including Whatsapp. So that we can all have a healthy work life balance I am asking that parents do not contact teachers after 7pm. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

The first few weeks of this term is time for staff to get to know students and do some more formal assessments. This will help to ensure IEPs are relevant and meaningful. We work collaboratively to set draft targets for each student that we will discuss with you in September. Your input is welcome and valuable.

Showcase – Diamond Class

Our First Week in Diamond Class

It seems Diamond students were excited for this coming school year as they all came in to their new classroom with smiles and settled in quickly to Diamond routines. It was lovely to see our returning students and to also meet our newest members of the JCSRS community; welcome William and Krisha. The start of school each year is filled with hopes and dreams that all students will have a safe, inspiring and fun school year and what better way to start the first day with a treasure hunt around school! Through ice breaker games, quizzes and photo presentations, Diamond members quickly became friends and felt at ease with the Diamond team. All students had an opportunity to introduce themselves and present photos of their summer adventures. Together as a group we talked about Diamond class rules and collaboratively made poster displays to put up in our new class.

A new school year is a fresh start that presents an opportunity to reexamine goals, assess areas of strengths and weaknesses, and devise strategies to optimize academic success; over the last 2 weeks, Diamond students have been working hard in Literacy and Math rotation stations and working individually with the therapists.  Each day we begin with a class discussion in circle time and through one on one reading and whole class storytelling, Diamond students have shown great listening skills and good understanding through comprehension questions. It looks like we are geared and ready for a wonderful school year ahead!

I consider it a great privilege and responsibility to be your child’s teacher this year, and look forward to meeting each of you.

The Sai Kung Community Centre

The Sai Kung Community Centre has been very supportive of our vocational programs. This year a group of our secondary students will continue to experience a variety of job roles at the Community Centre. Work tasks will include working at the Food Bank and with the nursery services. We wish to support the work of the Community Centre and would like to draw your attention to the flier attached.

Thank you!
